Dr. Yong Zeng is a Professor in the Concordia Institute for Information Systems Engineering at Concordia University. He was the President (2019 – 2023) and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for Design and Process Science. He was an NSERC Chair in Aerospace Design Engineering program (2015 – 2019). He was the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in design science (2004 – 2014).
Zeng’s research aims to understand and enable creative behaviors and habits. He has proposed a new design theory called Environment-Based Design (EBD). Specific topics of his research include the science of design, methodology for creative design, neurocognitive model of design creativity, behavior design, and creative machines. He has been developing computational, mathematical, behavioral, neuroscience, and design science approaches to human activities and human decision making. His research has been applied to aerospace, health, construction, education, management and governances.

As a postdoctoral fellow in DesignLab, Mengting Zhao has been working in DesignLab for more than five years where she published several papers and contributed to projects in collaboration with the industry and other research teams. Her current research focuses on the EEG-based quantification of cognitive states and the recognition of different behavioural patterns when people are performing complex cognitive activities. She proposed a task-related framework (denoted as “tEEG framework”) for identifying designers’ cognitive and affective states from EEG signals, which was built upon her pilot studies and previous research from DesignLab. This framework has been successfully applied within and beyond the context of design to identify human participants’ cognitive control and workload variations from their EEG data. Those applications indicated that the loosely controlled experiments proposed in the framework could be well supported by EEG microstate analysis, which appears to be an effective approach to facilitating ecologically valid neurocognitive studies.
